Micheldever failed as new town because of water constraints, says Government assessment

The Government published yesterday* an assessment of the over 100 sites submitted to the New Towns Task Force as possible new towns.

The sites were assessed against three objectives proposed under the New Towns Programme. Micheldever failed on Objective 4 - Deliverability. The assessment says:

"The Environment Agency has identified significant water supply issues within this area which will greatly constrain large-scale housing development."

The Dever Society welcomes this recognition of the serious issues regarding water supply in this area. These issues have been raised not only for the new town but also for the proposed development on Popham Airfield, and must also be taken into account in the decision on the planning application which has recently been submitted for the so-called Logistics Park on West Farm, Popham.
