Micheldever Wetland Project

You may have heard about the proposed Wetland project in Micheldever, or read the recent article in the Hampshire Chronicle.

The wetland aims to improve the local environment by removing nitrates and attracting wildlife.

Dever Society trustee Sarah Huck reviewed the initial report.

“On the face of it, the proposed wetland site at Micheldever would appear to be a positive addition. However at present, limited information is available in respect of this scheme. The Dever Society would be keen to hear further detail as and when this becomes available. Certainly at this stage, it would seem that benefits from the introduction of a wetland may include increased biodiversity, potentially supporting and attracting species such as the Great Crested Newt, Stone Curlew and Snipe, should areas of the existing tussocky pasture grasses be retained. Nitrate mitigation would also feature. This does, however, raise some concern within the Dever Society over current inhabitants of this area, which at present do not appear to have been identified, as it is understood extensive excavation would be required in the creation of the wetland. The Dever Society would also welcome any proposals of community benefit of the wetland, such as a viewing platform, so people may interact (although likely to a limited extent) with the site. Any such proposals are yet to be explored.”
